Anytime people gather to celebrate the impending arrival of a new life, the atmosphere is one of joy. Guests are already in the mood for some fun so why not give them what they want? Games are enjoyable for everyone and a great way to break the ice. They can be simply going around the room and passing on advice or something that involves more from your guests. Following are some ideas to get you started.
Word Scramble: Choose ten to fifteen baby- themed words and scramble the letters. Make enough copies for each guest to have one. Set a timer for five minutes. Award the guest who solves their scramble first with a small gift.
Mother's Name: Another word game, this one utilizes the mother's first, middle and last names. Again make copies with the name at the top of the paper. The object is to come up with as many baby related words a possible. Set a timer for ten to fifteen minutes. Whoever has the most words wins.
Hang the Laundry: For this game, you'll need to hang a clothesline. Have a laundry basket with baby clothes in it, a baby sized doll and a cell phone. Your guest will hold the baby, have the phone to their ear and pin the baby clothes on the line. All of this must be done without dropping either the baby or cell phone! Definitely a laughter inducing game!
Measure Mommy: Pass around a skein of yarn and a pair of scissors. Each guest is to cut a length of yarn to the size they think will just fit around the expectant mother's waist. Each guest will then, in turn, have a chance to try the yarn around the mother's waist to see how they measured up. The closest match wins a prize.
Baby's First Bank: When sending invitations, ask guests to bring some spare change. Purchase a child's bank. Pass the bank around the room. As each person places their change into the bank, they will offer a piece of parenting advice. This is a wonderful icebreaker and the baby will have his or her first bank with some starting cash!
These are merely a smattering of ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Showers are all about getting together to celebrate. Having games ready can be the icing on the cake. Be sure to purchase small gifts for prizes!
